Ms. Jennifer Capps

My name is Jennifer Capps. I am a four-year-old kindergarten teacher at HCJ. I began my career as a first grade teacher at Hunter Street here in York. During one of those years, I was honored to be the Hunter Street Teacher of the Year. After ten years, I transferred to start the new Harold C. Johnson Elementary School. I taught first grade for two more years here at HCJ. In 2013, I had the opportunity to begin teaching 4K. It’s such an exciting grade to teach. Everything is fresh and new for these little ones. A 4K classroom is like visiting a fun park each day. There’s laughing and playing and a whole lot of dancing, moving, and learning going on. As a 4K teacher, I was honored to serve as the HCJ Teacher of the Year in 2015 and also the York School District Teacher of the Year the same year. It was truly an honor to serve our district during my tenure.

I have worked very hard to become a Highly Qualified Teacher. After four years at Winthrop University, I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Early Childhood Education. Then, I earned a Master’s Degree in Divergent Learning from Columbia College. I am also a National Board Certified Teacher. However, I am a continuous learner. I keep current by reading books and articles and taking new classes. I always challenge myself to learn new styles of teaching and seek what is best for my students.

When I’m not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family. We enjoy visiting the beach or mountains, but preferably the beach. My parents are both retired and travel quite often. I have a niece and nephew who are in college. I enjoy reading tons of books, baking sweet treats, and researching my genealogy. I am definitely a cat person but have a heart for all animals! If asked my favorite thing to do in my spare time…it’s either sitting on the beach with a great book or shopping with my sister.
