Title I, Part A (Title I) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended (ESEA) provides financial assistance to local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards
The purpose of Title I, Part A of Public Law 107-110 is to enable schools to provide opportunities for children served to acquire the knowledge and skills contained in the challenging state content standards and to meet the challenging state performance standards developed for all children.
This purpose is accomplished by such efforts as
- providing an enriched and accelerated educational program;
- promoting school-wide reform through school-wide programs or through additional services that increase the amount and quality of instructional time;
- significantly upgrading the quality of instruction by providing staff in participating schools with substantial opportunities for professional development; and
- affording parents meaningful opportunities to participate in the education of their children at home and at school.
Eligibility for participation in Title I in York School District One is determined by free and reduced lunch participation rates. While all schools in York School District One are Title I eligible, the three schools with the highest free/reduced lunch participation rates are designated as Title I school-wide programs: Cotton Belt Elementary, Harold C. Johnson Elementary, and Jefferson Elementary.
York School District One’s Title I allocation for the 2019-20 year is $1,554,153.21. Funds this year provide for class size reduction in the three schools at all grade levels; part time reading interventionists; professional development; purchasing literacy kits, library books, online curriculum and technology; providing student incentives; and parent involvement activities. An interpreter is also available at HCJES through the use of Title I funds, and parent educators who work with families to improve school readiness.
Input and Suggestions
The district welcomes input into the Title One plan through involvement in the planning team, offering input via surveys, or otherwise providing input. Interested parties may contact Lisa Spangler in the district office or the principals at any of our Title I schools.
Parent participation and involvement are encouraged in all Title I Schools through opportunities to visit in classrooms, attend parent conferences, serve on committees, offer recommendations and suggestions, and attend meetings and workshops.
