  • ESOL (english for speakers of other languages)

The goal of our ESOL Program is to help students learn English so they are able to meet age-appropriate academic standards for grade promotion and graduation. Students normally participate for a period of three to five years and are expected to graduate from high school at the same rate as mainstream students. The time in ESOL is determined by the initial level of proficiency, motivation, and other factors which will be assessed yearly. To exit the ESOL Program, a student must be: (a) “fluent,” per the South Carolina State Department of Education Guidelines on Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners (ACCESS for ELLs), and (b) monitored for four years.
