YSD1 Announces YMS Science Teacher Michelle Shaver as 2022 District Teacher of the Year
YSD1 ANNOUNCES YMS SCIENCE TEACHER MICHELLE SHAVER As 2022 TEACHER OF THE YEAR
At the annual Opening Convocation on August 9, 2022, our back to school event for teachers and staff, the District proudly announced York Middle School’s Michelle Shaver as its District Teacher of the Year for 2022-23! Shaver, a science teacher, begins her 11th year of teaching this fall, all of those years as a science teacher at York Middle School.
Mrs. Shaver believes that one of the key components of being an effective teacher is to “actively participate in meaningful continuous learning opportunities to better serve students, fellow teachers, and the community.” She works to provide students a supportive environment to ask questions, use creativity, and build confidence to collaborate with others. She is continually thrilled when students make subject-area connections weeks later, and vows to “continue to show up for the students in the classroom and at extracurriculars each week to cheer on their successes!”
Mrs. Shaver earned a Bachelor in Science and a Master of Arts in Secondary Education, both from Winthrop University. She has served as chair of the Science Department at York Middle School and a member of the YMS Leadership Committee. She has worked with teachers-in-training as a Mentor Teacher with Winthrop University Junior Faculty, and is a Winthrop Initiative for STEM Educators (WISE) Recipient and current member.
