Emily Harper Named 2020 District Teacher of the Year!
On Monday, August 10th, at a Back to School Celebration for all York School District 1 employees, Mrs. Emily Harper was awarded the 2020 York School District One Teacher of the Year award.
Emily Harper is a Reading Recovery Interventionist at Hickory Grove-Sharon Elementary School. Mrs. Harper is a graduate of York Comprehensive High School and a York resident. Mrs. Harper has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Winthrop University and a Master of Education in Language and Literacy from the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Harper has taught at Hickory Grove-Sharon Elementary her entire career, teaching fifth grade, third grade, and currently serves as a Reading Recovery Interventionist.
Mrs. Harper feels an effective teacher must establish and maintain positive relationships with students and their families. She finds value in attending students’ birthday parties, church programs, sporting events, graduations, and other events, all to show her students their value and encourage them to take risks and make mistakes.
Mrs. Harper considers herself a life-long learner and uses her educational experiences to encourage her students. Her students are frequently amazed that she has a teacher too, and she finds it important that students see her as a learner as well as a teacher, as it shows they value learning.
