Dr. Lesley Reel Named 2021 York School District 1 Teacher of the Year Award

On Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at a Back to School Celebration for all York School District 1 employees, Dr. Lesley Reel was named the 2021 York School District One District Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Lesley Reel is a mathematics teacher at York Comprehensive High School in York, South Carolina. Dr. Reel is a graduate of York Comprehensive High School and has taught her entire career in York School District One. Dr. Reel has her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and her Master of Teaching from the University of South Carolina and her EdD in Teacher Leadership from Walden University. In addition to teaching mathematics at York Comprehensive High School, Dr. Reel has also served as an Adjunct Faculty at Winthrop University, an Adjunct Instructor at York Technical College, and an online faculty member at the University of Phoenix, Southern New Hampshire University, and Virtual SC.

Dr. Reel believes that teaching is a calling and that a teacher can be effective in changing the trajectory of a student’s future. She feels her goal is to prepare students to enter the next stage of their life, whether that be college, the military, or the workforce. She believes that a secondary math teacher must be innovative and creative in order to engage students. Her classroom allows students to grow as learners and leave prepared for the next phase of life.

Dr. Reel believes that it is critical to foster a culture of excellence in order to cultivate continued growth.  She challenges her students and pushes them to excel. In doing so, her students have earned over 250 college credits in dual enrollment courses. As an advisor to Mu Alpha Theta for over twenty years, she has worked to expose students to math challenges even before high school, creating a culture where students want to succeed in math and become active in the organization as high school students.
